BACKGROUND
Recognizing a significant issue faced by doctors during diagnosis, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the leading medical vehicle globally, acknowledges that patients often struggle to accurately describe pain. This challenge is exacerbated by language barriers or disabilities. However, understanding pain characteristics is crucial as they serve as vital indicators that guide the diagnostic process.
IDEA
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Thai Health Foundation partnered to create the universal pain language, a symbol system facilitating diagnosis across various illnesses without relying on verbal communication. Communication designers, in conjunction with pain specialists from Thai Health Foundation, Siriraj Hospital, and medical volunteers from Princess Mother Medical Volunteer Foundation, crafted each symbol. Our design approach employs instinctive design—rooted in fundamental objects, shapes, and forms—to create symbols based on universally perceivable experiences, ensuring a shared understanding for all.
